Nemec moved to another studio in Clintonville with fewer impulsive walk-ins and more freedom to do the tattoos he relished most. “I never meant to do it,” Nemec said of his foray into tattooing. It wasn't until 2010 that Nemec finally decided he'd had enough of working at the warehouse and sought a job at the now-closed Fate Tattoo. Nemec met his future wife in 2007 when Erin Rodehaver came to him for a possible cover-up of a black butterfly on her wrist. He didn’t end up doing the work, but the two hit it off and were married nine months later. Together, Dino and Erin, who took the Nemec last name, have two children - Luciana, 8, and Vigo, 5. Nemec resisted at first - tattooing was a solitary and personal artistic outlet - but with enough cajoling he relented. Before long Nemec was tattooing friends and acquaintances, refining his skill, making money and building a portfolio. The first tattoo he did was a small skull on his thigh, and Nemec continued to practice on himself, tattooing strange shapes and odd patterns. When a friend at the warehouse saw the designs on Nemec’s forearms, he asked Nemec to tattoo him. “I like to learn by myself and on my own terms,” Nemec said. Tattooing was taboo in Argentina, so on a whim he purchased a kit and taught himself the trade by using his own body as a blank canvas. Nemec took a job at a warehouse driving a forklift, but he couldn’t shake his artistic urge. After three years, he moved to the Columbus area in 2005 with just $120 in his backpack. When he was 18, Nemec moved to Puerto Rico, where he worked in construction, landscaping and as a physical education teacher. It’s a defining trait that gave rise to the name of his studio, “ Lone Wolf.” Nothing about the experience of getting a tattoo from Nemec is redolent of a quintessential tattoo parlor where hard rock blares and artists serve a slew of walk-in clients. Bluegrass music plays softly in the background of the shop, and the only tattoo machine buzzing is Nemec’s, who prefers to work alone. Together, the pair brainstormed the details as Nemec sketched a rough design of what he would eventually tattoo on the inside of Polen’s right bicep. Whenever Polen is shining a light down a patient’s ear, he said he can’t help but think of it coming out the other side, so he asked Nemec to create a skull with a ray emanating from one end. On this day, Polen came to Nemec with an idea that would pay homage to his profession as an audiologist. ![]() “His style is super specific and hard to find,” said Polen, who added that he was willing to pay more for the creation than past tattoos he’s received. Nemec's elegant and intricate designs of nature and animals are the reason that people such as Polen, 29, are willing to wait for more than a year for a session with him. ![]()
